Bombo Quarry, located near Kiama in New South Wales, is a fascinating geological site that offers visitors an extraordinary look at nature’s raw beauty. Once a working quarry, it is now famous for its towering basalt columns, created millions of years ago by volcanic activity. These unique rock formations rise dramatically from the ocean, creating a rugged and striking landscape that feels almost otherworldly.
One of the main attractions of Bombo Quarry is its role as a natural classroom for geology enthusiasts, where you can witness the powerful effects of ancient volcanic forces. The site’s hexagonal basalt columns are a rare phenomenon, offering an impressive example of how lava solidifies into striking geometric shapes.
The surrounding coastal scenery adds to the dramatic appeal, with crashing waves against the cliff faces, and panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Photographers flock to Bombo Quarry for its striking visual contrasts, especially during sunrise or sunset when the lighting enhances the textures and colors of the rock formations.
Whether you’re a geology buff, a photographer, or simply a nature lover, Bombo Quarry provides an unforgettable experience. Its unique landscape is both a testament to the power of nature and a beautiful reminder of the ancient forces that have shaped the Australian coastline.

Amazing Geological Site! Truly one of the Seven wonders of Australia. I got the chance to visit Bombo Headland last week on my way back from Jervis Bay. The sunset was a pleasant view. Coupled with the cotton candy skies, I would recommend this location to anyone on a roadtrip down south. Peaceful environment where you can immerse yourself with nature. The trekking to the site is considered easy so it is definitely good for families! Swipe for photos & videos of the site!

Occasionally I found this place from the map for a random family weekend and then was impressed by the natural wonders: thunder powerful waves, magical rocks, and enormous geological features. All are stunning and amazing. All of us feel that we are lucky to find this place and be aware the great place is so close to us!

Bombo Headland Geological site has a beautiful beach with surreal rocky landscape.
The rocks somehow looked like an old castle from years ago. Sort of had an end of the world vibe. I loved it. It's something really different

There was more than one route to reach this site, and we initially took a path where the strong smell from the Bombo Wastewater Treatment Plant filled the air with sulfur and other unpleasant odors. Thankfully, we found another path with fresher air that led us to the site. The rocky landscapes were magnificent, resembling the ruins of an ancient castle.
